Soon after launch, Otrium's marketplace model gained traction, and they began expanding across Europe. But then, the complexities of cross-border commerce became clear.
“The first market we went into was Belgium, but we didn't fully understand how customers there preferred to pay,” Milan explains. “Mollie helped us figure it out, testing different payment methods, running A/B experiments, and getting things right.”
Otrium then expanded into Germany, France, and the UK. Each new market came with new challenges: multicurrency transactions (and settlements), cross-border compliance, and mobile-first payment experiences became increasingly critical.

Building for the next stage
By 2020, Otrium had outgrown its ecommerce platform. It needed something more flexible to scale – but switching platforms while running a high-growth business is no small feat. Payments had to keep working seamlessly.
“We couldn't afford even a second of downtime,” Milan says. “Mollie understood that – and they worked with us to make sure everything ran smoothly from day one.”
The challenge? The existing Mollie integration with commercetools – Otrium's new platform – didn't fully support their mobile app, a key revenue driver. And it needed to work flawlessly from day one.
So, alongside agency Shopmacher, Mollie built a bespoke plugin that easily and seamlessly integrates their solution into any commercetool webshop.
Otrium was the launch partner for the new integration, working closely with Mollie's engineering team to refine and perfect their setup. The result was a setup that wasn't just functional but tailored to the real-world needs of a scaling online business.
“When we told Mollie that the integration needed to be optimised, they didn't push back,” Milan says. “Instead, they collaborated with us, built a new connector, and even provided funds to make the transition easier. That's what a real partner does.”
