London, 19th March: Mollie, one of Europe’s leading financial services providers, today announced the UK launch of Tap, its new in-person payments solution designed for small and medium sized businesses. The launch combines a portable contactless payment terminal with a standalone Tap app, enabling UK businesses to accept payments in-store, on location, or directly from any NFC-enabled device like a smartphone or tablet.

The launch expands Mollie’s in-person payments offering in the UK, giving SMBs a more comprehensive way to accept payments in-store. It builds on more than 20 years of payments experience and Mollie’s work in supporting more than 250,000 businesses across Europe.

The news comes as the UK and Europe look to strengthen the future of their payments infrastructure. With Tap, Mollie aims to simplify in-person payments by combining modern payment hardware with its existing software ecosystem, allowing businesses to manage online and offline payments in one place. 

A portable payment terminal designed for modern businesses

At the centre of the launch is the Tap terminal, Mollie’s portable contactless payment terminal designed specifically for SMBs and self-employed professionals. The device can be set up in seconds, allowing merchants to start accepting payments quickly without complex installation or hardware integration.

The lightweight device enables merchants to accept contactless card payments, digital wallets and QR payments from a single device. Built with mobility in mind, the terminal includes integrated 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity, a full-day battery, and a large touchscreen display designed for fast, intuitive transactions.

Unlike traditional payment terminals, Tap features a front-facing NFC reader, allowing customers to tap their card or phone without needing to rotate the device. The Android-based device also supports additional business tools such as digital receipts via email or SMS, tipping, automated end-of-day reports, and transaction history, helping businesses manage payments and operations more efficiently.

Accept payments instantly with Tap App

Alongside the terminal, UK businesses can also start accepting payments immediately using the Tap app, which turns any compatible smartphone, tablet or kiosk into a contactless payment device. This allows merchants to begin accepting payments without purchasing additional hardware, providing a flexible starting point for businesses that operate on the move or want to start taking in-person payments with minimal setup. As businesses grow, they can add the Tap terminal to their setup while continuing to manage payments through the same Mollie platform.

A more comprehensive in-person payments proposition

With the launch of Tap terminal and Tap app, Mollie is strengthening its in-person payments offering for UK businesses, combining portable hardware and smartphone-based payments within a more complete proposition for businesses selling in physical environments. The launch also marks Mollie’s first proprietary payment terminal, representing a significant step in extending the company’s payment expertise into hardware while building on its broader software ecosystem.
