What is the difference between iDEAL and iDEAL 2.0?

In the current iDEAL payment flow, consumers select their bank either directly on a business's payment selection page or Mollie's hosted checkout. They are then redirected to their bank's online environment to confirm the payment. 

In the updated iDEAL flow, consumers will select iDEAL in the checkout and will be redirected to an iDEAL Hosted Payment Page with two bank selection options. They can then either:

1. Choose their bank directly on iDEAL hosted payment page

2. Scan the QR code with their banking app to approve the payment

Additionally, bank selection can be streamlined through new customer recognition features, which sends push notifications to the customer's mobile device for payment confirmation, ensuring a smooth and efficient payment experience.

When will iDEAL 2.0 be available through Mollie?

We're working closely with iDEAL to have the new iDEAL 2.0 flow ready for customers as early as possible. We've started testing and will be welcoming businesses into a beta programme in April, and we expect to begin migrating customers to the new consumer experience from 1 May .

Our priority is to ensure that any changes to the iDEAL payment flow are optimised for conversion and do not adversely affect the customer experience.

What are the key features of iDEAL 2.0?

iDEAL 2.0 introduces the option for consumers to create a personalised profile. This profile conveniently stores payment preferences and essential details like delivery and email addresses, streamlining the payment process. 

Simply put: it’s going to make paying with iDEAL faster and more convenient. But let’s look at how it will actually work and the different features.

iDEAL payment page will enable: 

  • iDEAL QR: The customer pays directly via their bank app using a QR code (on desktop).

  • iDEAL Pay Fast: the customer's preferred bank is automatically chosen based on their preferences for faster payments.
