Mollie has launched a renewed version of Pay by Bank, built on the technology of GoCardless, which Mollie acquired earlier this year. Pay by Bank lets consumers pay directly from their bank account, through a faster, more efficient checkout designed to boost conversion. Thanks to GoCardless's open banking technology, Mollie connects directly to the banks Dutch consumers already use.
Pay by Bank combines GoCardless's pan-European open banking connectivity – direct connections to 2,500+ banks – with Mollie's own leading checkout experience. The result is one solution that supports one-off payments, recurring payments, and invoicing from the same technical foundation. Because Mollie owns that connection directly, the payment completes in three steps, instead of the five typical of other open banking solutions – for businesses, fewer steps means fewer chances for a customer to drop off before they pay. Pay by Bank is the first major product to come from bringing GoCardless and Mollie together since the acquisition earlier this year.
"Businesses deserve a payment infrastructure that simply works," says Koen Köppen, Mollie CEO. "Reliable, invisible, and fully embedded within their own environment. Rather than launching a new brand, we prefer to build the infrastructure that businesses can rely on. We believe this is the ideal way forward."
Mollie Pay by Bank also offers guaranteed payments, instant confirmation, and transparent pricing. By securely capturing the customer's IBAN at the moment of payment, it can also be used for more than just a one-off transaction – including a direct route to recurring revenue through Direct Debit.
"Bringing GoCardless and Mollie together was never about adding a logo to our portfolio," Koen says. "It was about building the foundation for exactly this kind of product. Mollie Pay by Bank is the first proof of that vision, and it won't be the last."
Alongside Pay by Bank, Mollie is introducing a public Issuing Bank Performance Page, giving insight into how reliably banks perform within open banking connections. "Open banking only works if every link in the chain performs well," Koen says. "If we ask consumers and businesses to trust this way of paying, transparency is the very least we can offer."
Pay by Bank is available from today for businesses and consumers in the Netherlands. Expansion to the rest of Europe is planned throughout 2027.
"We're starting in the Netherlands because this is where we can immediately prove, at scale, that it works," Koen adds. "We're bringing more than a new product. We're building the infrastructure the next generation of European payments will run on."
