About HomeWizard

Founded in 2011, HomeWizard initially focused on creating everyday smart household products. But in 2021, the team had an epiphany when one of them asked, “Why are we making an air fryer smart by adding Wi-Fi to it? Let’s make something that matters. Something people actually need”. 

This simple question sparked a company-wide pivot. 

HomeWizard decided to focus exclusively on giving people a way to monitor their energy usage. They shifted to a direct-to-consumer (D2C) model and launched their flagship product: the P1 Meter. This affordable, easy-to-use device plugs into a home’s smart meter, giving customers real-time data on their energy consumption through the HomeWizard app.

As always in business, timing is crucial, and when the 2022 European energy crisis sent prices skyrocketing, adoption of the P1 Meter also took off. 

HomeWizard quickly became the market leader in the Netherlands and Belgium, and set its sights on the rest of Europe. For their entire D2C journey, they have relied on the powerful combination of WooCommerce for their storefront and Mollie for their payments.

The challenge

Expanding across Europe wasn’t straightforward. HomeWizard’s products rely on compatibility with national smart meters, which means they couldn’t follow a typical growth playbook.

Instead, the team adopted what they call a “wide-net approach”. Launching their WooCommerce store in multiple countries at once, from the Nordics to Austria and Hungary, and then using data to see what worked. 

This agile strategy could only work with a commerce and payments platform that was just as flexible. HomeWizard needed to solve several key challenges to make this strategy work:

  • Complex operations: Launching and managing stores in more than ten languages and currencies could easily become an admin nightmare.

  • Local payment preferences: To build trust and maximise conversion, they had to offer the specific payment methods customers in each country preferred, from iDEAL Wero in the Netherlands to EPS in Austria.

  • Limited resources: With a lean team, they couldn’t afford a solution that required heavy development or maintenance. 

  • Scalability: Their chosen platform had to be stable and reliable enough to support rapid testing in new markets and sustained growth in successful ones.
